Contest! The Power of Soapnuts, Enter to Win

Have you heard of soapnuts? They are actually tree fruits full of soapy saponins that can clean your laundry, dishes, and even your body. They are an awesome way to save on plastic packaging, trash, and use of synthetic chemicals. They are also great for sensitive skin or those with chemical sensitivity.

For the past 4 months, I’ve been using soapnuts to do my laundry. I have been happy as a pea with my laundry. I if you frequently have tough stains, you can fortify soapnuts with some washing soda to help remove them.

It’s super simple – place 4-5 soapnuts in a cotton muslin bag (it was provided with my order from BuySoapnuts.com) and toss it in with your regular load. And then you’re done!

I also made my own soapnuts liquid – I boiled 14-15 soapnuts in 6 cups of water, and used this to wash my dishes. Add baking soda, lemon, salt, and vinegar for a complete dishwashing liquid. It’s not super sudsy, but I can see it working right away. Food and stains come off easily and my metal pots shine radiantly.

The benefits of using soapnuts for laundry and other household cleaning:

  • There is no plastic packaging waste (the 1lb bag does come in a plastic ziploc, but these soapnuts will be used for many different purposes, saving a number of plastic bottles).
  • Soapnuts grow from trees, so when you’re finished with them, toss them in the compost!
  • No synthetic chemicals are used. Therefore, there is way less energy consumed and no pollution created.
  • Perfect for sensitive skin. I have the occasional eczema outbreak. With soapnuts I see them no more!

How will the winners be chosen?

I will try to make this process as random (fair) as possible, courtesy of random.org.

First, I will enter eligible readers into the List Randomizer. This will assign each person an integer at random.

Then, I will use the Sequence Generator to generate a set of sequence of integers. The Sequence Generator takes the range of numbers (for example, if 8 people were eligible, the range would be the integers 1-8), and spits out a random order of these integers in a vertical column:

5
8
4
3
6
2
7
1

In this case, the person designated number 5 will be the grand prize winner, taking home a 500g bag of organic soapnuts. The two people designated numbers 8 and 4 will each take home a trial size of organic soapnuts. All of these include at least one cotton muslin bag for laundry use.

Thanks for reading!

Thank you for being so generous as to do a contest for your readers! That’s really cool. I have known about soap nuts since 2004 but haven’t thought about them since. Thanks for bringing them back to my attention to try to be as No Impact as possible :)

I actually found this blog from the Sierra Club’s No Impact thing, which I’m doing, too.

Have you had a chance to read the book, Lynn?

    • Lynn Fang says:

Hi Kim, thanks so much for stopping by! I thought it’d be fun to add in a contest with getting feedback. I haven’t had a chance to read the book yet. Have you? Let me know how your experiment goes! Best wishes.

Love the contest idea, Lynn! I submitted your questionare form, so let me know if you didn’t get it for some reason.

I think what you’ve been writing about is fantastic and I love your action-oriented, lead-by-example style. :)
